Garmin GPS Google Earth Maps

for 2010 - Walk! Tour & Trail Map Sections for Garmin GPS mapping units and
Google Earth use.
In Nov 2009 Garmin announced a new upgrade for its Dakota, Colorado and Oregon
mapping units; this 'update' is unusual in allowing users to input their own
maps to Garmin's Dakota, Colorado and Oregon units.
Once you have picked up your software upgrade from
http://my.garmin.com your Dakota, Colorado or
Oregon is ready to accept mapping that meets the Garmin criteria of:-
Max map image size of 1,024 pixels by 1,024 pixels, or equivalent rectangular
size. Map image prepared in the Google Earth KMZ file format.
If you have a Garmin mapping unit such as a GPS60 or eTrex then it might be a
good idea to contact Garmin to ask when this software upgrade will be made
available for your gps unit.
Preparing maps for use in Garmin units is a technical exercise, see Garmin's

We have converted my Tour & Trail mapping so that you have the Walk! Abroad
books mapping available in kmz file format, meeting Garmin's criteria, ready to
load into your Dakota, Colorado or Oregon.
We have produced 'Walking Route Map Sections' so that when you decide on a Walk!
route you can call up the Tour & Trail Map Section that goes with that route,
meaning you will have a real time moving map display on your gps (Dakota,
Colorado or Oregon ) while walking the route.
Many of our Walk! walking routes will fit a single map section but longer routes
have required two and sometimes three map sections.
Garmin's kmz file format spec has an extra bonus in that our 'Walking Route Map
Sections' open in Google Earth, our original 2D map being laid/stretched over
the Google Earth 3D terrain model layer plus our semi transparent background
colours mean that you can see both the Tour & Trail Map section and the Google
Earth detail. Viewing of our walking routes in real time is very exciting. You
simply open the map file by clicking on it and Google Earth will open to whirl
round and zoom in to show our Tour & Trail map section.
Personally I think this Google Earth facility alone would justify buying our new
'Tour & Trail Map Sections for Garmin GPS' even if you do not have a Garmin
Dakota, Colorado or Oregon.

'Walking Route Map Sections' Specifications
We've taken the latest Tour & Trail mapping, which includes our new 2009 maps
for Mallorca, Madeira, Lanzarote and Menorca, plus my Tenerife Hiking Map to
produce 'Walking Route Map Sections' for each Walk! destination that goes with
the maps. On Mallorca we have so many walking adventures that we have had to
split the files into 'GR221', 'Mallorca N&M + W pt1' and 'Mallorca N&M + W pt2'.
